Com apoio da Secretaria de Cultura do Estado de São Paulo – via ProAC, Douglas Crimp, reconhecido historiador da arte e curador norte americano, vem ao Brasil para duas palestras e uma entrevista nos seguintes espaços: Ateliê 397 (SP), dia 05 de maio; Auditório do Instituto de Artes da Unicamp (Campinas), dia 07 de maio e JAMAC – Jardim Miriam Arte Clube (SP), dia 09 de maio . O evento, intitulado “Before Pictures. Encontro com Douglas Crimp” é organizado por Mônica Nador (artista visual fundadora do JAMAC), Sylvia Furegatti (artista visual e professora da Unicamp) e Thais Rivitti (curadora e diretora do Ateliê397). Ao completar 70 anos, Crimp rememora sua trajetória e apresenta à comunidade artística e aos demais interessados em arte e cultura contemporâneas seu mais recente trabalho.

Conhecido no Brasil principalmente pelo livro “Sobre as ruínas do museu”, um marco na discussão sobre o papel das instituições na arte contemporânea, Crimp expõe suas mais recentes investigações teóricas derivadas de experiências vividas por ele na cidade de Nova York, na década de 1970, quando então combina sua atuação entre a crítica de arte e ativismo político à cena gay daquele momento.

Sempre muito atuais, os estudos produzidos por Crimp propõem uma revisão das posturas políticas intituladas de “queer” ou “gay”. Ele discute novas perspectivas ao rótulo “alternativo” ditado pela cultura dominante e assim aplica uma aproximação total entre Arte e Vida ao entrecruzar as cenas e os campos que combinam arte e comportamento no mundo atual.

A programação conta com a palestra “Front room, Back room”, de Crimp, que acontece no dia 05 de maio, no Ateliê 397/SP, com interlocução de Ivo Mesquita (curador), repetindo-se em 07/maio, no Auditório do Instituto de Artes da Unicamp. As palestras serão abertas ao público mediante a retirada de senhas no Ateliê397 e inscrição online para o evento na Unicamp.

Além das palestras, Crimp será entrevistado no JAMAC, no dia 09 de maio, por Fabio Cypriano (crítico de arte), Maristela Bizarro (cineasta e ativista), além de Mônica Nador, Sylvia Furegatti e Thais Rivitti. A entrevista terá transmissão ao vivo e poderá ser acompanhada por meio da TV Jamac.

O recorte proposto pelo evento ocupa crescente espaço de interesse pelos mais distintos representantes do circuito artístico, tanto quanto encontra espaço nas pesquisas da Universidade confirmando assim, sua atualidade e urgência frente ao mundo contemporâneo. Vídeos e publicações derivadas dessa visita de Douglas Crimp ao Brasil estão programadas para serem lançadas logo na sequência.

Before Pictures. Meeting with Douglas Crimp

With the support of the Secretaria de Cultura do Estado de São Paulo – through ProAC, Douglas Crimp, an acclaimed North American art historian and curator, comes to Brazil for two lectures and an interview to be held at Ateliê 397 (Sao Paulo), on May 5; the Auditorium of the Unicamp Institute of Arts (Campinas), on May 7; and JAMAC (Jardim Miriam Arte Clube) (Sao Paulo), on May 9. The event, entitled “Before Pictures. Meeting with Douglas Crimp”, is organized by Monica Nador (visual artist and founder of Jamac), Sylvia Furegatti (visual artist and professor at Unicamp), and Thais Rivitti (curator and director of Ateliê397). Now, at the age of 70, Crimp recalls his career and presents his latest work to the arts community and those interested in contemporary art and culture.

Known in Brazil mainly for the book “On the Museum’s Ruins”, a milestone in the discussion about the role of institutions in contemporary art, Crimp shows the results of his recent theoretical investigations into what he lived and experienced in New York City in the 1970s, when he would combine his works as an art critic and political activism with the gay scene at that time.

Always very up-to-date, the studies carried out by Crimp propose a review of the political stances entitled “queer” or “gay.” He discusses new perspectives to the “alternative” label dictated by the dominant culture and so applies a total approach between Art and Life by intersecting the scenes and the fields that combine art and behavior in today’s world.

The program includes the lecture “Front room, Back room” by Crimp, which will be held on May 5 at Ateliê 397/SP. He will be in conversation with Ivo Mesquita (curator), and the lecture will also be held on May 7 at the Auditorium of the Unicamp Institute of Arts. The lectures will be open to the public, which can collect passwords at Ateliê397 and register online for the event at Unicamp.

In addition to the lecturers, Crimp will also be interviewed at JAMAC on May 9 Fabio Cypriano (art critic), Maristela Bizarro (filmmaker and activist), Mônica Nador, Sylvia Furegatti, and Thais Rivitti. The interview will be broadcast live on the Jamac TV.

The topics to be dealt with at the event attract growing interest from a variety of players in the art scene and have been the subject of research at the University, thus confirming their relevance and urgency in the contemporary world. Videos and publications derived from Douglas Crimp’s visit to Brazil are scheduled to be released soon after.
