Com o apoio da Secretaria de Cultura do Estado de São Paulo – via Proac, o Ateliê397 realizou três exposições e cinco seminários por agentes de esferas distintas como Paola Berenstein Jacques, Guilherme Boulos e Rafael Vogt que visaram  discutir a presença da cultura popular nas obras e no pensamento sobre arte hoje, articulando  as noções de identidade nacional, cultura e dominação em relação.

With suppot of Secretary of Culture of the State of São Paulo – through Proac, the Ateliê 397 produced three exposition and five seminars by agents from different spheres such as Paola Berenstein Jacques, Guilherme Boulos and Rafael Vogt, who aimed to discuss the presence of popular culture in works and in thinking about art today, articulating the notions of national identity, culture and domination in relation.

 

 

Arquitetura Radical X Arquitetura como prática política
com Diego Mauro e Ícaro Vilaça, mediação de Raphael Escobar

SOBRE A CONFERÊNCIA

Partindo da crítica antimoderna dos anos 60, Diego Mauro e Ícaro Vilaça apresentarão, de maneira performativa, numa espécie de “batalha de imagens”, diferentes respostas para a crítica (e a crise) do moderno: de um lado, os que trilharam o caminho da utopia (Constant Nieuwenhuys, Superstudio, Archizoom), do outro, os que insistiram no potencial transformador da arquitetura (Lucien Kroll, Arquitetura Nova, Carlos Nelson F. dos Santos, Cooperativas Uruguaias, Mutirões Autogeridos). Os limites e as contradições das duas respostas serão objeto de especial interesse por parte dos dois pesquisadores.

Radical Architecture vs. Architecture as a political practice

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Starting from the anti-modern criticism from the 1960s, Diego Mauro and Ícaro Vilaça will present, as a performance, in a kind of “battle of images”, different responses to the critique (and crisis) of the modern: on the one hand, those who have followed the path of utopia (Constant Nieuwenhuys, Superstudio, Archizoom), and on the other hand, those who have insisted on the transformative potential of architecture (Lucien Kroll, New Architecture, Carlos Nelson F. dos Santos, Uruguayan Cooperatives, Self-Managed Groups). The limits and contradictions of the two answers will be of particular interest to the two researchers.

A partir de alguns exemplos pontuais de trabalhos de quatro artistas e arquitetos – Hélio Oiticica, Marcel Gautherot, Lúcio Costa e Lina Bo Bardi – buscaremos compreender a apropriação da cultura popular como um contraponto crítico ao movimento moderno em arquitetura e urbanismo no Brasil e, em particular, ao que seria uma de suas maiores realizações: o projeto e a construção de nossa capital moderna no planalto central do país: Brasília.

Based on some specific examples of works by four artists and architects – Hélio Oiticica, Marcel Gautherot, Lúcio Costa and Lina Bo Bardi – we will seek to understand the appropriation of popular culture as a critical counterpoint to the modern movement in architecture and urbanism in Brazil, and particularly to what would be one of its greatest achievements: the design and construction of our modern capital in the country’s central plateau: Brasília.

Pensar a cidade- sua paisagem, seus fluxos, suas possibilidades de uso é também tarefa que vem sendo desempenhada por artistas e críticos de arte. Contudo, apesar das boas intenções e da consciência crítica que usualmente animam esse trabalho, é preciso reconhecer que os processos de “revitalização” urbana (como vem sendo chamados pelo poder público e pelas grandes corporações), muitas vezes, utilizam-se de uma certa ideia de cultura para sua legitimação. É em nome da cultura que se expulsam antigos moradores locais e que bairros populares transformam-se em bairros de elite, com a promessa da construção – que muitas vezes não sai do papel – de equipamentos culturais “de interesse de todos” como museus, teatros e auditórios.

Também é preciso lembrar como, historicamente, a presença de artistas e a configuração de um meio cultural pulsante em determinadas áreas foram capazes de valorizá-las e convertê-las em alvos privilegiados para a especulação imobiliária. Como todos aqueles que atuam no campo da arte, nas mais diversas posições – artistas, curadores, produtores, gestores públicos – podem se colocar diante desse uso equívoco da cultura? É possível evitar que as práticas artísticas e o trabalho desenvolvido a longo prazo por artistas, coletivos e espaços junto à comunidades locais sejam capturados pelo mercado? Para aprofundar essa conversa convidamos Guilherme Boulos, coordenador Nacional do MTST (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Teto), que há anos defende a necessidade de uma reforma urbana ampla e urgente para São Paulo, para debater com Raphael Escobar, artista e membro do movimento “A Craco Resiste” com a mediação de Thais Rivitti, crítica de arte, curadora e gestora independente.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Thinking about the city – its landscape, flows, possibilities of use – is also a task that has been performed by artists and art critics. However, despite the good intentions and critical awareness that usually inspire this work, we have to realize that the processes of urban “renovation” (as they are called by the government and big corporations), often use a certain idea of culture for them to be legitimated. It is in the name of culture that former local residents are expelled and low-income neighborhoods are transformed into elite neighborhoods, with the promise – which often does not materialize – to build cultural facilities “of interest to all”, such as museums, theaters, and auditoriums.

It should be noted that historically the presence of artists and the setup of a pulsating cultural setting in certain areas have valued them and turned them into privileged targets for property speculation. How can all of those who work in the field of art, in the most diverse positions – artists, curators, producers, public managers – stand up to this misuse of culture? Is it possible to prevent artistic practices and the long-term work developed by artists, collectives and spaces with local communities from being captured by the market? In order to deepen this conversation, we have invited Guilherme Boulos, National Coordinator of the MTST (Homeless Workers’ Movement), who has been defending for years the need for a comprehensive, urgent urban reform for São Paulo, to discuss with Raphael Escobar, an artist and member of the movement “A Craco Resiste” [Cracolândia resists], mediated by Thais Rivitti, an art critic, curator and independent manager.

Tendo como referência as obras de Yuri presentes na exposição, a mesa propõe-se a debater, afinal, o que falamos quando falamos em cultura popular no Brasil. A defesa das expressões ditas “populares” que, durante um longo período, permaneceram apartadas das discussões da arte contemporânea tornou-se lugar comum nos discursos críticos da atualidade. Mas, o lugar que essas manifestações ocupam nos vários discursos em voga na atualidade é bastante diverso: ora elas servem a recomposição de uma noção estanque de identidade nacional, ora elas realmente abrem um diálogo profícuo entre o que se costumava classificar de alta a baixa cultura. Debater esses usos diversos da cultura popular é algo necessário para se mover no debate da arte contemporânea hoje.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Based on Yuri’s works which are shown in the exhibition, the purpose of the panel is to discuss what we mean by popular culture in Brazil after all. The defense of the so-called “popular” expressions, which have remained detached from the discussions of contemporary art for a long time, has now become commonplace in today’s critical discourses. But the place those manifestations occupy in the various discourses in vogue today is quite different: sometimes they serve to recompose a rigid notion of national identity, or they actually open a fruitful dialogue between what used to be rated as high and low culture. Discussing the different uses of popular culture is critical to move into the debate on contemporary art today.

SOBRE A CONFERÊNCIA

Com o apoio da Secretaria do Estado da Cultura, via ProaC, o Ateliê397 realiza o balanço da programação de 2017, onde o Ateliê397 dedicou-se a pensar de que forma o meio artístico brasileiro vem absorvendo as reivindicações políticas e demandas sociais do presente. Muito se fala sobre o constante tom político presente nas grandes exposições de arte – da atual Documenta de Kassel às últimas bienais de São Paulo– e na própria produção artística da atualidade. Questões raciais e de gênero ganham espaço e se apresentarem com protagonismo na programação cultural da cidade de São Paulo. Contudo, é necessário pensar se essa nova pauta das grandes mostras sediadas em importantes museus e centros culturais corresponde, de fato, a um alargamento da participação das ditas minorias sociais no campo da arte. Da mesma maneira, é necessário refletir se a produção artística– aqui compreendida não apenas como obras de arte, mas também como pensamento crítico – vem contribuindo com a construção de uma sociedade mais igualitária.

Identidade Nacional, Cultura e Dominação foi composto por três exposições: Forma, processo e prática política – curadoria Ícaro Villaça, À noite, o mundo se divide em dois – Jaime Lauriano e Raphael Escobar, e Palimpsesto, de Yuri Firmeza com curadoria de Thais Rivitti. A última continua em cartaz até o dia 16/09. Além disso contou com conferências e debates, com mesas compostas por agentes de esferas distintas como Paola Berenstein Jacques, Guilherme Boulos e Rafael Vogt.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

With the support of the São Paulo Department of Culture, through the Cultural Action Program (ProAC), Ateliê397 reviews the 2017 programming, in which Ateliê397 dedicated itself to reflecting on how the Brazilian art community has been absorbing today’s political and social demands. Much is said about the constant political tone found in major art exhibitions – from the current Documenta in Kassel to the last editions of Bienal de São Paulo – and in the current artistic production itself. Racial and gender issues make their way and play a leading role in the cultural schedule of the city of São Paulo. However, it is necessary to consider whether this new agenda of major exhibitions held in important museums and cultural centers actually corresponds to an increased participation of the so-called social minorities in the field of art. Similarly, we have to reflect whether artistic production – understood not only as works of art, but also as critical thinking – has been contributing to the development of a more equal society.

National Identity, Culture and Domination was composed of three exhibitions: Forma, processo e prática política [Form, process and political practice], curated by Ícaro Villaça, À noite, o mundo se divide em dois [At night, the world divides in two] by Jaime Lauriano and Raphael Escobar, and Palimpsesto [Palimpsest] by Yuri Firmeza, curated by Thais Rivitti. The latter is still on until September 16. Additionally, it included conferences and debates, with panels formed by agents from different areas, such as Paola Berenstein Jacques, Guilherme Boulos, and Rafael Vogt.
